What other Canadian communities are there? Your Grade 2 child will apply their understanding of community to an Inuit, an Acadian and a prairie community. They will come to appreciate how these communities are shaped by a variety of factors, such as the past, where they are located, the groups to which they belong and the exchange of goods and services. We have a lot of books for this grade, but there are areas I would still like to develop. I'd found little at their level on Acadian communities especially. If you, reader, know of any you could recommend, please leave your suggestions in the comments. The following books are available in the SHS Library. Click on the covers for descriptions & reviews. AcadianPrairieInuitThe Grade 2 class will do an author study on Inuit author Michael Kusugak in library class. They especially love the little rhyme in Hide and Sneak and it leads perfectly into stories and lore about inuksuit. The turning of the season is marked by the autumnal equinox, although fall comes early here and it often snows in September. The Alberta science curriculum specifies the study of seasons in Grade 1 but the autumn theme can be applied to science unit topics in other grades, such as animals, plants, trees, sky science & more. It can also be incorporated into many other subjects such as LA and Art. Fiction and Nonfiction Picture Books About AutumnThese books are all available in the SHS Library. Videos on Learn 360A search for "autumn" in Learn 360 yielded 119 results: full videos, short videos, video clips, audio, music tracks, images and articles. The search can be narrowed down by media format, as well as by subject area, grade level, other search terms & language. Examples: Learn 360 can be glitchy but with over 100,000 resources, it's worth it. Your safest bet is to download the video ahead of time. Let's hope that the new platform being launched this winter will straighten things up. The Username & Password can be obtained from your librarian or district technology team. Fall Crafts...Around the 'Net...Tom ThomsonAutumn is also a great time to study iconic Canadian artist Tom Thomson. Many of his brilliant paintings celebrate the vibrant Algonquin autumn. The mystery of his untimely death at age 39 could also be tied into the Grade 6 Evidence and Investigation unit. |
